Portsmouth City Council unveiled a new package of incentives at the Compass Jobs Fair on Monday, 25 November 2024, aimed at attracting and retaining top social work talent amid national recruitment challenges.

The demand for social workers continues to rise across the UK, but fewer people are staying within the profession. Portsmouth is addressing this by introducing initiatives to attract experienced practitioners and support newly qualified social workers.

Alongside career progression opportunities, a health and wellbeing programme, and relocation support to help professionals settle in the city. Portsmouth City Council has introduced a market supplement payment of up to £3,000 for experienced social workers in specific teams.

suzy hortonCouncillor Suzy Horton, Cabinet Member for Children, Families, and Education, at Portsmouth City Council said:

“Recruiting social workers is a challenge faced by councils across the country, as the demands of the role can be a barrier when people decide to enter or stay in the profession. That’s why it’s so important for us to attend events like the Compass Jobs Fair, where we can connect directly with practitioners, showcase the support we offer, and highlight why Portsmouth is such a rewarding place to work.

"Social workers in Portsmouth make a real difference to children and families, and we want them to feel supported and valued in their careers. These new benefits show our commitment to creating a workplace where social workers can thrive and grow.”

The council is also focusing on long-term solutions, such as social work apprenticeships and employment programmes, to train the next generation of practitioners and offer more accessible routes into the profession.

Portsmouth has seen significant success in recent years in developing and retaining social work talent. The Assessed and Supported Year in Employment (AYSE) programme has been a key part of this, training up to 20 newly qualified social workers each year and providing them with the support and experience they need to establish successful careers.

In addition, the council has been successful in converting locum and agency staff into full-time employees, reflecting the positive and supportive working environment within the service.
